Soil science / ecological construction supervision
The project
Location: Gränichen / Suhr (AG)
Client: Federal Roads Office FEDRO
Phases: Submission, realization and commissioning
Duration: 2019 - 2021
For the construction of the Rynetel wildlife overpass in the municipalities of Suhr and Gränichen, forest areas were temporarily cleared on both sides of the N01 national road and installation areas were created. In addition, existing forest paths were rerouted to keep people away from the portal areas of the wildlife overpass in future. New and different types of ground areas were recultivated on the newly created cover of the national road and ecological structures and alternating wetland biotopes were created. In total, around 3,500 m2 of additional ground surface was created, 2,500 m2 of temporarily used forest ground was
were restored, 500 m of existing forest paths were dismantled and recultivated and 320 m of new forest paths were created. Ecosens AG's soil science construction supervision was responsible for soil protection in all phases from project planning to commissioning. A largely balanced soil balance was achieved across the entire project by recycling local forest soil (road clearance) and forest soil removed from a nearby highway construction site (Lenzburg Süd junction).
Optimization and minimization of the soil areas used as part of the project planning, evaluation of soil protection measures for the construction work and integration into the submission
Sampling and analysis of suspected contaminated soil along the roadway and classification in accordance with waste legislation
Pedological surveys in the forest areas on both sides of the national road to determine the natural soil properties and to define the recultivation/repair objectives
Soil science construction supervision during the entire construction and repair work, monitoring and implementation of measures for physical and chemical soil protection and environmental regulations
Coordination / procurement of forest subsoil and topsoil from nearby forest construction sites, testing of the desired soil properties and correct interim storage at soil depots
Supervision of the extensive recultivation work on the wildlife overpass, backfilling of various types of soil (raw/subsoil, topsoil and subsoil, gravel substrate, etc.) and restoration of the temporarily used forest floor areas
Challenges
Large areas of temporarily used soil surfaces and high levels of soil movement, in particular recultivation/redesign of the soil on the flyover
Very high and varied requirements for soil protection in all project phases
The construction phase lasted one and a half years and spanned two winters, making it challenging in terms of dry soils and optimal weather conditions
Procurement of large quantities of suitable forest soil (topsoil and subsoil) and temporary storage on external construction sites at soil depots
In coordination with forester, landscape architect and wildlife ecologist, professional recultivation of various soil substrates on the wildlife overpass
Our solutions
Soil protection already takes place in the planning phase. Early involvement of a soil expert, early planning of soil protection measures and integration into the contractor tendering process enable soil-conserving implementation
Early involvement and good contact with all parties involved (forester, wildlife ecologist, etc.) lead to a common understanding of the project and objectives and promote good cooperation
Close cooperation with and supportive advice to the contractor ensures an understanding of the soil protection measures to be implemented and thus a high-quality and technically correct execution
Prudent and holistic planning allows opportunities to be recognized and exploited. As a result, the forest soil removed from a nearby construction site could be used for the wildlife transfer and used as high-quality soil (closed material cycles, sustainable use of resources).
With level-appropriate and precautionary investigations, suspected suspicions and uncertainties can be checked and, if necessary, dispelled or further measures planned
