Phases: Preliminary investigation of contaminated sites
Duration: 2021 - today
In the agricultural area of a Zurich municipality, there are two large, old landfills where municipal waste and building rubble used to be deposited. Both landfills were entered in the register of contaminated sites as requiring investigation and the municipality was requested by the Office for Waste, Water, Energy and Air (AWEL) to carry out a preliminary investigation of the two sites. Ecosens AG then carried out a historical investigation of both sites and drew up a specification for the technical investigation for the relevant soil and groundwater protection goods. Once the specifications had been approved, a total of four groundwater measuring points were set up and numerous groundwater and soil samples were taken and analyzed. The investigations showed that the contaminated sites do not pose a risk to the environment, meaning that the classification under contaminated sites legislation could be adjusted.
Procurement and evaluation of historical documents, aerial photographs and maps, preparation of historical studies
Exposure analysis of the various protected goods and development of investigation concepts / specifications for the technical investigations
Tendering for drilling work, obtaining drilling permits, surveying utility lines and coordinating with the affected landowners and farmers
Management of drilling campaign and construction of groundwater measuring points, recording of geological profiles, coordination of groundwater sampling with laboratory
Planning and implementation of extensive soil sampling from various depth ranges, recording and documentation of soil properties
Evaluation and assessment of the analysis results of the groundwater and soil samples, legal assessment of the two contaminated sites
Challenges
Exploratory drilling was carried out on third-party land and in some cases in the vicinity of an overhead power line, which required special clarification and coordination
Due to the period of landfill, there was also a suspicion of PFAS contamination in the soil and groundwater at one landfill site
