Phases: Preliminary project (SIA Phase 31) and construction project (SIA Phase 32)
Duration: 2025 - 2026
Schweizer Salinen AG has been mining salt in the canton of Basel-Landschaft for decades, currently in the Sulz and Grosszinggibrunn area. The basis for this is a concession from the canton of Basel-Landschaft, which covers a concession area south of Muttenz, Pratteln and west of Liestal. In order to ensure Switzerland's uninterrupted supply of salt for the coming years, the expansion of the existing Grosszinggibrunn brine field to include stage III is currently being planned. The expansion comprises a total of five new production wells in the municipality of Pratteln (BL), with which an additional 600,000 tons of salt are to be extracted. A new pumping station and a new transport pipeline to connect to the existing supply lines are also required to develop the new drilling sites. The new drilling sites and the pumping station will be located entirely in forest areas, while the transport pipeline will run partly through agricultural land and touch on crop rotation areas (FFF).
The project represents a significant change to a plant subject to an EIA and is therefore also subject to an EIA in accordance with Art. 2 para. 1 let. a of the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO). Ecosens AG was already commissioned as an environmental specialist for the preliminary project, examined the environmental impact of the project and prepared an environmental impact report (EIR) for the construction project.
Evaluation of project fundamentals, procurement and evaluation of general environmental data and special reports as well as official requirements for the EIA
Creation of an environmental relevance matrix for all environmental aspects including specific special topics for the initial state as well as the construction and operating phases
Participation in project development, carrying out inspections and clarifications with cantonal authorities for environmental project optimization and approvability
Assessment of the environmental compatibility of the project, evaluation of accompanying measures in the construction phase and ecological compensation measures
Preparation of a detailed environmental impact report (EIA main study) for the brine field expansion and the necessary infrastructure (drilling sites, pumping station, transport pipeline)
Comprehensive advice and support for clients in the project planning and approval process
Challenges
Challenging framework conditions due to the local topographical conditions and corresponding construction and integration into the landscape of drilling sites and pumping station
Located in a forest area in accordance with the Forest Act (WaG) and adjacent to the landscape of national importance «Gempenplateau» (BLN area object no. 1107)
Deep geology project with three-dimensional impact system and long-term aftercare phase
Extensively affected environmental aspects such as forest, nature, landscape, soil, water protection, waste and contaminated sites
Drilling work for cavern construction runs around the clock, making night-time noise and light emissions highly relevant with specific measures
Our solutions
Early involvement of the cantonal and communal approval authorities and the various specialist offices of the canton in the project planning phase enables the development of a construction project that is ready for approval
Acquiring good local knowledge through inspections and field surveys
Utilization of comprehensive expertise and practical experience from previous projects in other solar fields
Forward-looking and far-sighted planning of the long construction and operating phases, incorporation of empirical values from existing and ongoing brine fields, development of practical solutions
Close and supportive cooperation in an interdisciplinary project team with specialists from various consulting firms (geology/hydrogeology, engineering, environment, etc.) and Schweizer Salinen AG
