Odor clarification with emission testing of building materials
The project
Location: Dietikon (ZH)
Client: Private owner
Phases: Odor complaints in new buildings
Duration: 2023 - 2024
The apartment building in Dietikon was completed as a new build in March 2022. Shortly after moving in, the owners noticed an unpleasant foreign odor in the children's room of their apartment. In order to identify the cause, Ecosens AG carried out indoor air measurements - which revealed significantly increased concentrations of an odor-active substance (2-ethylhexanol).
To identify the sources of the odor, several surfaces in the bedroom were masked with aluminum chambers (ALUKA). During the subsequent odor test, it was determined that the odor most likely originated from the floor structure. For this reason, core drilling was carried out in the final step and material samples were taken. It was finally determined that the odor was being emitted by the parquet adhesive.
The solution was to remove the parquet, sand down the adhesive and lay an insulating film before installing new parquet. These measures eliminated the odor in the bedroom.
