Conversion and extension of Wetzikon Hospital

Conversion and extension of Wetzikon Hospital - completion of excavation work in August 2020

As part of the “Conversion and extension of Wetzikon Hospital” project, extensive construction work with an investment volume of approximately 250 million Swiss francs is being carried out between 2018 and 2025. The first stage involved dismantling various adjoining buildings in order to create space for the planned extension. The excavation and civil engineering work for the extension and the staff accommodation was carried out over the past one-and-a-half years. The excavation pit has a surface area of more than 5 000 m2, while over 65 000 m3 of material have been excavated. Various specialized civil engineering methods (underpinning, retaining walls and soil nail walls, etc.) were used.

Ecosens AG has been entrusted with the mandate for environmental monitoring (German: UBB) as part of the total project. The excavation work for the staff accommodation and the extension was monitored by an Ecosens AG specialist from the Disposal Department, and who was responsible for the correct triage and disposal of the contaminated building waste. As the excavation work is now complete, the pit was handed over to the builder in September 2020, with the construction project progressing to the next stage. Once the new buildings are in place, all existing buildings will be fully remediated during the final building stages.
