In the context of the Swiss aid in eastern Europe, the State Secretariat
for Economic Affairs (seco) assigned Ecosens Inc. in 1999 to
plan an incineration plant for hospital waste in Miskolc, a city of
almost the same size as Zurich with a population of more than 300'000. Ecosens
Inc. was responsible for the submission, the selection of a provider
and the supervision of the installation and initial operation.
Firstly we had to examine the site proposed by the Hungarian partners as
well as the respective infrastructure. Such a site was found 15 km east
of Miskolc on a former industrial property. In order to ensure that the
plant could be used to full capacity of 500 t/a, 10 hospitals were obliged
to incinerate their waste in the plant. A number of technical problems
had to be solved especially due to the limited local infrastructure.
In 2001, the first inspection measurements could be carried out and the
plant could be commissioned.
