Remediation of a Contaminated Site
at the Shore of Lake of Geneva |
|
During dismantling and excavation activities on a 5000 m2 sized plot situated
directly next to the lakeshore, the site management was surprised by
a contamination, which extended on almost half the plot. At least 20'000
litres of heating oil had been spilled into the soil and into the ground
water. At another spot the ground water had been substantially contaminated
with phenol like substances.
Thanks to the pile planking, which had been installed around the plot at
the beginning of the building operations, remediation measures could be
taken without further delay. Firstly, a waste water treatment plant was
installed on site, which was able to eliminate the heating oil, which had
partially emulsified in the water, as well as the phenol like substances.
In a second step the ground water level was lowered by means of a ground
water pump. The contaminated soil was subsequently excavated to a depth
of 6 to 7 meters.
Altogether, 10'000 m3 of contaminated water could be purified by means
of this method. 2'000 tons of slightly contaminated soil was deposed in
a landfill for inert substances, 11'000 tons of substantially contaminated
soil was sent by train to Eberhard Recycling AG in Rümlang (Canton
of Zurich) to be treated in a soil washing bay.
Ecosens Inc. settled the entire remediation project within five
months.
